I need to be non-offensive as she also sends me the occasional client, but she is out of control with the “forwarding” emails.
And I can’t tell which are which as the email “re” is always blank.
I don’t think there is any way around actually telling her face to face or by email.
You could just ask her whether she could not send you any forwarded emails at all because you always delete them and it clogs up your inbox!?
But if you want her to filter what she sends you the only way is by telling her that some of the emails offend you.
I’d try the first option and ask her to stop sending you any chain emails. I wasn’t offended when someone asked me to stop sending chain mail years ago.
Your company probably has some kind of policy on using email for personal use. You could remind her of this policy and say that you don’t want her, or yourself getting in trouble by violating this policy.
Also mention to her that you get 100′s of e-mails a day and that with all her additional forward’s it hard to separate and organize them all.
I usually go with sarcasm in these situations. I know that it endears me to all my co-workers.
Just forward them right back to her with a little message like:
gosh thanks for ALL the email forwards you send me I could just spend hours reading all this propaganda I feel my brain is getting cleaner and cleaner with every one. I don’t really have time to work anymore but who cares because I have all these emails to read. Thank you! You truly are the Queen of email forwards.
Maybe you could tell her you get a LOT of junk e-mail and to avoid deleting her important e-mails it would help if she put something in the subject line regarding the clients she is sending your way. That way you aren’t exactly telling her not to send her junk, just asking for a way to identify the important messages. Maybe she’ll get the hint.
If you really believe that telling her the truth will negatively affect her referring clients to you, then why not ask her to fill in the subject line for all of her emails? Tell her this helps you to file your emails in to different folders for achiving.
Tell that while you respect her views it is difficult for you to go through the large amount of email that you already get and could she please restrict her emails to work related topics.
Try and be as tactful as possible with the truth, if it works.
The truth would be that you don’t have time to read email of a personal nature, and would rather that she stick to business.
Ask her to put something in the subject line that lets you know which e-mails are important and which aren’t. (Just tell her to put the SUBJECT in the subject line!) Tell her you get tons of important e-mail and tons of junk mail, and with no subject line, something important may accidentally get deleted!
Just tell her straight-up. I forward political emails all the time but when someone asks to be removed from my political ‘spam’ list, I do so. It takes only a second to remove a person from a list and everyone stays happy…….
I get to promulgate my political stance, those who agree or at least enjoy my rants get to read, and all who wish to be left alone are left alone.
win-win-win
EDIT: Put this person’s email addy in your blocked list.
Set up a free dummy email account somewhere. Then tell this annoying person to send any non-business related messages there. Tell her you have to do this because you are getting so over loaded with work emails and that you want her “important” messages to not get mixed up with your work stuff. Give her the address to the dummy account.
Then you won’t have to read any of those stupid emails and once a month set a reminder to delete your dummy account.
She probably isn’t reading them either, just forwarding them to you bc with emails now days isn’t that what you supposed to do? but I think you should jsut delete them..period .. I mean there are so many other things that we can find to complain about people.. as a matter of fact if you want to why don’t you just automatically have her emails sent to a junk mail folder.. that way you don’t even have to look at em.. but lets grow up people.. just be glad she isn’t backstabbing you.. stealing your ideas and promoting them as her on and so forth… so the moral of this comment is don’t sweat the small stuff…sweetie life is just tooo short.
Ask her to please refrain from emailing anything not work-related. You don’t need to say that your Inbox is full, that you get a ton of messages, that you automatically delete them, etc. You don’t need to justify yourself at all. She should comply, that’s it.

why not just delete them instead of making a big deal?

You could always tell her that your company is cracking down on personal E-mails and is monitoring the system…

Just send an email asking her to not send you non-work emails.
Most people understand that everyone’s in-box is just too full.
